Last Night
I learned that my state, Maryland, has passed a bill in support of gay marriage (it now has to go through the state senate so it’s not even OFFICIAL, but nonetheless a step in the right direction.) I also learned that I associate myself with someone that is pretty intolerant. I had always known that this person was religious, but never to the extent that they couldn’t see the complete fairness and necessity of something like that bill. It was a reminder that there are people out there fundamentally hate what I stand for and more importantly that the people that oppose me I may have actually considered them close at one time or another.
I don’t usually get into politics with other people because I don’t really have tough skin and it’s hard for me to be completely objective. So a lot of times I get very emotional. And when I see that there is a person who cannot be persuaded I don’t feel like I should waste my time trying to plead to them. Especially online because I feel that a lack of tone can change the essence of the argument. And that leads to miscommunication.
Getting away from the debate side of things, I am very happy about this positive step. Honestly, I never thought that I would see the day that Maryland would approve such a measure in any aspect of the government. Especially after it was shot down last year. And even though I don’t think I will get married, there is comfort in knowing that it is an option for me if I happen to get into a situation leading towards that.
